A young Emerson has already overcome a lot in his six weeks since being rescued from a Florida shelter. He suffered from a condition called canine parvovirus, which can be fatal if left untreated. Emerson survived. But it was only the beginning of his saga. A staff member noticed something odd about Emerson after he recovered.

“Neither Emerson’s hearing loss nor his visual impairment have bothered him one bit. We don’t know if it was the seizures or if Emerson was born deaf.
He was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” in the same post, making Emerson more confused since all three of his siblings had been adopted. However, Emerson and the staff did not give up. As part of their adoption campaign, they convinced people that Emerson couldn’t be a loyal companion just because he was different.
In response to this Facebook post, my foster mom said, “My foster mom thinks it’s because people are nervous about me because I am deaf – and she wants to make sure everyone knows that being deaf is the LEAST of my worries! ” said one Facebook post. My foster mom says that I’m a happy-go-lucky little dude! I love everyone and everything and I don’t mind not being able to hear!” the post stated.

The perfect candidate was found weeks later. Nick Abbott wanted to adopt the dog, and seeing the dog’s challenges, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of connection. They are both deaf, after all. It was definitely a rendezvous with destiny. I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty well,” Abbott tells the news outlet. “He sat down right at my feet right away.” It was clear that Abbott and Emerson had a connection that was loud enough for everyone else to hear. After Abbott taught Emerson visual commands, Abbott communicated with Emerson.
We called the “sit” command the “s” sign for Emerson, and “lie down” meant making a straight line across Abbott’s hand. Other people considered it to be a detriment, but it turned out to be the key piece of the puzzle. A beautiful friendship between man and beast is the product of Emerson’s disabilities, which enabled him to find a home that would love him. Abbott told WABI they have an awesome bond. “We understand each other very well, and I think we’ve been meant to be together.”.
