Amos was born blind and Jess Martin fell in love with him while volunteering at her local animal rescue center. The timid pup was having trouble finding his forever family when she heard he was struggling. This became the house that might forever change Amos’ life, after it started out as a short lived family for him.
Her 9-year-old terrier Toby was Jess’s best friend, so she was a bit concerned about how he would react to his foster brother at first. Amos and Toby had been on amazing adventures together, and had formed an incredible bond, which made the thought of adding another member to their small family a bit intimidating. However, after a couple of days of uncertainty, their friendship blossomed. Having spent most of his life at a rescue center, Amos had never lived in a home before Jess. Simple tasks, like finding the water bowl, were extremely challenging for Amos. He encountered walls, was terrified of the sounds of the television, and was even weary of the carpet on his paws.
Initially, Toby wasn’t sure about Amos, but Jess noticed something amazing. In the early days, Toby nudged Amos in the right direction when he struggled to find his water bowl. After a few useful nudges, Amos was able to get his own guidance. Jess and her family knew that Amos was another beloved partner. He saw an ophthalmologist as he grew older.In the end, it was decided that Amos might benefit from removing his eyes, so Toby took on the role of his “unofficial seeing-eye dog.” After Amos underwent the surgery, Toby took on the role of his “unofficial seeing-eye dog.”.
The first time Amos and Toby walked together, Amos became disturbed. Uneasy. As a result of the noise around him, he hopes to rest frequently to organize himself and lie down. Whenever he was able to continue hiking, Toby would lie next to him and wait with him! They now enjoy hiking through the hills together!Â
The two have developed a pleasant communication between them, and they know each other’s boundaries as they travel through the hills. They guide Amos back along the trail whenever he strays off the trail with body bumps and nudges.
The art of hiking has been mastered by Amos, but socialization and interaction with other dogs remain a major challenge for him. Because Amos cannot speak like a traditional dog, Toby often plays the role of a middleman, causing many dogs to be delayed. Jess and Toby are enhancing his socialization skills every day.
Amos is in good hands with Toby since he’s a guide and bodyguard at the same time! They will be friends for the rest of their lives!
