In the animal kingdom, real friendship transcends all boundaries.
Despite the fact that many animals are compelled to dislike others, and in many cases actively hunt them, there are numerous examples of animals that have developed truly unlikely friendships, such as dogs and raccoons, or bears and wolves.
However, no story of a dog bonding with its family’s cow has moved me more than this one.
During the time when Rookie was a member of his family, he quickly formed a strong bond with the humans who took care of him. But one creature would always hold an even greater place in Rookie’s heart: the family cow.
Seeing the unlikely pair become fast friends, people couldn’t believe their eyes – the cow was often seen licking Rookie’s coat, cuddling with him, and letting him sleep on her back.
Consequently, when the time came for the farm’s cow to be sold, it was a bitter blow for Rookie.
Despite their desire to keep the cow, the owners could not afford it.
There is no doubt that anyone who has lost a dear friend can empathize with Rockie. Dogs, of course, have feelings just like humans, and their behavior when they feel distressed is evident.
In the barn, Rookie waited for hours, clutching the faint hope that his best friend would return. Rookie barked and cried and searched for his friend time and time again.
Rookie heard a distant moo one day. He rushed from his yard, rushed down the street, and chased after the voice until he found her! She lived in another barn in the village, but she was still close enough for him to hear her. He was thrilled!
After his owner had followed him from his own property, Rookie was scolded and brought home. Rookie’s mood returned to normal – he felt anxious about being separated from his companion.
Despite knowing where his best friend was, he just couldn’t reach her. Nothing could give Rookie joy. He layed in the barn with empty eyes, waiting for her to come back. The worst part was that he knew where his best friend was, just couldn’t get to her.
Rookie’s family soon realized that the situation was hopeless and that it wasn’t right to keep them apart if he was prepared to go to such great lengths to see his friend.
As they couldn’t bear to see the family dog in this state, they bought their old cow back, despite the difficulties it might have presented.
