There is a fantastic and unique program that the La Vista Police Department in Nebraska has designed to help shelter dogs get adopted. Not only is the program off to a great start, but the dogs are also enjoying the ride. A police officer from the Nebraska Humane Society picks up a dog that is in need of a home from the Nebraska Humane Society and then takes them on a ride-along for the day.
Dogs are brought out of a stressful shelter and put in front of people by the program, which has many benefits. As a result, the officers’ bond with their community is improved. It raises awareness for shelter animals and increases the chances of adoption. This is an amazing outreach program for both dogs and the police department, according to La Vista Police Captain Officer Bryan Waugh. “K9 For A Day not only helps dogs find loving homes, but it is an excellent chance for cops to bond with their communities as well.”
Mickey, a super friendly black and white bull terrier mix that went on patrol with Officer Jeannette, was the first dog to find his forever home. Not only do the dogs have fun, but the officers do as well. Mickey spent a day riding along with Officer Jeannette’s K9 For A Day program visiting kids, businesses, patrolling the streets, and charmed everyone he met. As shown in his video, Mickey even learned a few new tricks, courtesy of Officer Jeannette. We couldn’t be happier for Mickey and all the dogs that are chosen to become K9 For A Day. We cannot wait to see what the future holds for Mickey and all the lucky dogs.
