There is no doubt that the love between a mother and her child is the most powerful force on earth, judging by the speed at which this mother-baby duo unites after their first encounter.
The National Zoo of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. has a Western Lowland gorilla cuddling her new baby. Everyone at the zoo was moved to tears when 15-year-old Calaya gave birth to her first child, making the event even more touching and unforgettable. However, no one was disappointed since Calaya and her darling baby Moke quickly won everyone’s hearts. He is named Lingala, a word that means “little one.”
While Calaya cradled his son tenderly in her arms, she assured him that he would always be loved and cared for him with kisses and hugs. Since the Western Lowland Gorilla is a critically endangered species found only in Africa, each birth is a momentous occasion.
It was an amazing and historic event for both the Smithsonian Institution Zoo and the species as a whole that the western lowland gorilla was born, according to Merith Bastian, curator of primates. My goal was to provide Calaya with the best possible foundation to succeed since she is a first-time mom. Both Calaya and the zookeepers have my full endorsement.
