Dogs are always loyal and loving to their owners, even when they have passed away. Dogs are emotionally intelligent and can grieve in their own way – some will even visit their graves to pay respect as well. Like one sweet dog, who can be found holding a seaside vigil for his deceased owner, as shown in bittersweet viral photos. Jolie Mejía was visiting the seaside town of Punta Negra, Peru when she noticed an unusual sight: a dog was on the beach all by himself, staring intently at the ocean.
Jolie said he didn’t appear abandoned, wearing a ribbon around his neck and having clean fur. “I petted him, waiting for his owner, but they didn’t show up.” The dog watched the ocean waves as Jolie petted him, but had no interest in doing anything except watching the waves. She nearly took the dog in, thinking he had been abandoned on the beach. But soon, a man came along and explained that the dog was at the beach every day, for a heartbreaking reason.
Jolie wrote on Twitter, “Since his owner passed away a while back, he stares at the sea every day.” There is a dog named Vaguito who seems to understand that his owner went to sea one day and never returned. Perhaps he is holding a vigil for his deceased owner, or maybe he is hoping one day his master will return. “[He] gets excited every time he sees boats,” Jolie wrote.
The Dodo reported that while Vaguito’s story is sad, she was happy to learn that he isn’t alone: “Practically everyone in the area knows him and is very fond of him,” she said. The people in the small community take care of Vaguito, feeding him and sheltering him. According to a veterinarian, Vaguito is cared for by a woman nearby. There is nothing that can replace the love Vaguito received from his departed owner, but he’s still getting plenty from his current owner.
Seeing how loyal dogs remain to their owners after they’ve passed on is truly a sight to behold. Our hearts break as we see how much Vaguito misses his owner, but we’re glad he’s still well cared for – and we’re reminded how much love a dog has for its owner.
