At only a month and a half old, this tiny black lab mix found himself sick in a shelter and needed a loving home. Unfortunately, special needs dogs are harder to place. This is a heartwarming story about how a puppy, who beat the odds by fighting for his life, ended up being rescued by the most perfect person.
As a result of the deadly parvo virus and seizures, the young pup was living in a shelter in Florida. Though his prognosis was poor, an organization called NFR Maine decided to save his life. The rescue and foster organization took in the pup and moved him north, hoping to find him a loving home and cure him.
A visit to the vet revealed the little guy had another issue once he arrived at NFR Maine-he was also hearing impaired. It was unclear whether or not the pup had the problem when he was born, or whether he had acquired it during his illness, but it would be another hurdle to overcome as they searched for the right home for him. They knew if the right person came forward, the 2-week-old puppy would make an excellent pet. And, the right person came forward!
Despite being deaf, Nick Abbott, 31 of Maine, was able to adopt Emerson within 24 hours after submitting the adoption paperwork. Emerson became his new best friend within a week. The puppy and Nick immediately connected when they first met. Nick began teaching the puppy simple sign language right away. Emerson began to completely trust Nick, and the two have no difficulty communicating. When Nick touches Emerson’s earlobe, he barks! The two are adorable!
It’s a blessing to have Emerson in the arms of his new owner, Nick, and we are thankful to NFR Maine for rescuing him from the shelter.
