Melissa, 35, lives at Old Dogs Home in Conyers, Georgia on 11 acres of land. She never imagined how much the organization would grow when she started a rescue organization called Old Dog Home to help her fulfill her dream of rescuing old dogs in need of TLC.
We will rehabilitate and adopt out dogs that come to us that can be rehabilitated. Melissa explained on Facebook that, for those who are too old or too ill, the family will take care of them until they are able to go to heaven. “If they are too sick or too old to live, we will be their family. We will do everything we can to give them love and a family for their last years.” Melissa just received a distressing phone call from Old Dog Home’s veterinary partner, who informed her that a client had brought in his elderly dog to be euthanized since he “didn’t want to take care of her anymore.””
After Holly’s original owner passed away, she went from home to home until she ended up with Melissa’s family. Holly is about 10-12 years old and is as sweet as can be. Due to the fact that they had two other dogs, Holly peed all the time, and the grandkids were not interested in her, they decided not to keep her. While the dog stood there, wagging and wagging and wagging her tail, Melissa said: “We just aren’t big fans of her.” I try not to pick on children, but the granddaughter shrugged. ‘We like our other dogs better.’
Despite their age, old dogs are still remarkably resilient and forgiving. They deserve a Forever Family just as much as any younger dog. “My real mission in life is to show the world that “old” does not mean “dead”… old dogs still have life and love to give,” Melissa wrote. “They are remarkably resilient and forgiving, and they deserve to be rescued just as much as any younger dog.” Melissa will find Holly a loving home when she is healed both physically and emotionally, where she will receive excellent care for the rest of her life and be spoiled and loved.
“After that, I will have another opening, and I will save another old abandoned dog that nobody wanted,” Melissa continued. “That is the dream, folks. It is the dream.”
