Having no home leaves stray dogs to fend for themselves, finding food and shelter on the streets on their own. Especially heartbreaking when a stray puppy is just starting out, with nothing to comfort her. A rescuer stepped up to save the puppy after finding her in need.
A Serbian man who feeds over 100 stray animals out of his own pocket, Goran Marinkovic, is dedicated to helping the stray animals in his community. The puppy he found last March on her own and fending for herself was using an old shoe for shelter when he found her. Of all the animals he has helped out, one really stands out.
When Goran passed a narrow pathway, he heard cries coming from the rocks. “She was cold, hungry, thirsty. I gave her salami as soon as I saw her.” With just an old boot for warmth, Goran feared the pup wouldn’t last much longer in the elements without a mother and other puppies.
Goran decided to take the dog to the hospital – and she willingly accepted. “She was exhausted,” Goran said. “She knew that I might be her only chance, so she surrendered to fate.” Upon discovering the stray puppy had a bright, cheerful personality, he named her Coco, and she was easy going.
As soon as Goran shared Coco’s story on social media, adoption requests flooded in and he found Coco the perfect home in Germany. According to Goran, he keeps in contact with the family and receives pictures of Coco, showing how much she has changed and grown since last year. Coco is currently traveling with her new owners. Even though Coco’s story has a happy ending, Goran is far from finished. He plans to care for more strays, and hope they will be able to find homes as well. “Every rescued dog from the street who finds a home is a victory for me,” he told The Dodo.
The kind person who steps up to take in stray animals is a very precious creature. It is amazing to see how far Coco has come since she lived in a shoe!
